Zeitgeist: Londra brucia

In questo, meteorologicamente parlando, tiepido agosto, Londra brucia. E si fa un gran parlare del ruolo di twitter e del BlackBerry nella protesta. Come si legge in un editoriale del Guardian che tenta di spiegare la rivolta:

The riots are a product of the lives which the rioters choose or feel constrained to live. Blaming the riots on individual wickedness, conspiracies or on government spending cuts is too glib for such complex issues, though they cannot be dismissed altogether even so. Both conspiracy and deprivation are part of the complex and grim story, as is the cult of violence, especially guns, and a rage against exclusion from consumerist fulfilment. A new Scarman would no longer be able to explain these riots as an outburst of resentment against the police. But they are an outburst of resentment and a mark of manifold failure all the same.

 E questo sentimento di esclusione, che è una tessera del puzzle di questa rivolta, è evidenziato anche dalle statistiche. In un editoriale di marzo 2010 sempre il Guardian riportava i dati OCSE secondo cui la probabilità che un bambino da una famiglia povera possa accedere ad una migliore educazione ed un lavoro con salario più elevato dei suoi genitori è più bassa in UK che in altri paesi occidentali.Guardate chi è al secondo posto nella classifica OCSE della immobilità sociale:
